Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal Treatments Using the Gentlest
If a tooth's nerve is inflamed or has died, the jawbone reacts with chronic inflammation or acute infection. Pulsing or pounding pain and swelling are part of this process, which may be caused by e.g. deep-seated caries. A root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) commonly serves to preserve the tooth and to eliminate the symptoms.
We perform root canal treatments under local anesthesia. To ensure sterility and protection from saliva and bacteria, the concerned tooth is isolated by use of a dental dam ("Kofferdam" in German). During the first appointment, access to the tooth's nerve is created.
Our clinic in Zurich-Höngg performs root canal treatments using the most gentle, state-of-the-art techniques. Reciproc® technology allows for precise, speedy treatment with the highest possible standard of hygiene by using sterile disposable files.
Following effective flushing and medicated inlays, the area where the tooth's nerve enters the tooth needs to heal. This takes some time. During a second appointment, the root canal system is flushed again and a new medicated inlay is applied. If the tooth shows no symptoms during the third appointment, the root canal system can be closed by inserting a thermoplastic filling of gutta percha. The tooth can now be rebuilt. To provide long-term stability, most cases require a crown. If symptoms persist, root end surgery can be performed in order to try to save the tooth.
