Parafunctional Habits

Tooth Grinding, Jaw Aches – Signs
of Parafunctional Habits

The grinding of teeth and clenching of the jaw, also known as bruxism, mostly occurs at night but can also happen in the daytime. Bruxism often causes pain in the jaw muscles and wears down the teeth. The result is an over-exertion of the entire oral structure.

Problems involving the temporomandibular joint and tension in the muscles of mastication can cause headaches, jaw and tooth aches, and often also involve neck and back pains.

Strong clenching or grinding may cause loss of vertical dimension and faulty jaw or tooth alignment, resulting in the problems listed above. Stress can also be a possible cause.

A functional analysis performed by your dentist can help with the diagnosis. Individually created mouthguards or splints often bring palpable relief of symptoms. Sometimes, it is necessary to raise the bite by cementing composite material made by the dentist or a ceramic addition made by dental technicians on the worn down teeth. Some cases require working with an orthodontist or physical therapist. A functional analysis enables us to take the necessary steps.
